History: Wickham Cricket Club.

Wickham Cricket Club play in the idyllic setting of the grounds of Rookesbury Park Estate. The Club has a long history of village cricket, with score books still in existence dating back to the 1890’s.

The present pavilion was built by members of the Club and opened in 1967, and fund-raising is currently ongoing with the aim of building a new one, with improved facilities.

The oldest entry in the current minutes book shows that in 1948 the annual subscription was 5 shillings (2/6d for under 18s) and the treasurer reported a balance in hand of £30 2s 0d. Things have moved on somewhat since those days!

In the early days there was no formal League in the area and all Saturday and Sunday fixtures were friendlies. Wickham joined the Wiltshire/Winchester League at its formation in 1982 and during the next 8 years were winners or runners up on 6 occasions. Wickham joined the newly formed Hampshire League in 1991 and currently play in Regional Division 2 South East.

As well as playing friendly fixtures on most Sundays throughout the season, and some midweek games, Wickham still plays a team in Division 2 of the Wilds Sports 20/20 League, which has taken over the Winchester & District Evening League.

The Club continues to flourish, maintaining it’s tradition of village cricket, played in the village by a team, many of whom have close links with the village.
